Late 1700s to 1826
The Wilder and Bowers Flaxseed mill was a large oil mill and the first mill built on Stirrup Iron Pond Brook. It operated successfully for several years; however, the cultivation of flaxseed stopped, and the mill was wiped out by a freshet in 1826.
On this site, Henry and Samuel Calef built a grist mill. After that, John Emerson established a tannery. The site also included William Holme’s saw mill. Only the stonework ruins are left. Private property, posted.
Location: Junction of Route 127 and Stirrup Iron road (now Gerrish Road), north side.
